Skiing Torrey's Peak 6/24/17
Climbed / skied Torrey's Peak via the Tuning Fork on an amazing blue bird day. Met Paul at 3:30am and headed up towards Bakersville. After negotiating a rough 4wd road and some creek crossings, we got as close as we could by vehicle and starting hiking at 6am. Another creek crossing on foot (w/o getting wet, btw) and then we switched to ski boots and crampons. Made it to the base of the Tuning Fork and started boot packing up. After getting to the top of the snow field ~10am the snow surface was still rock solid. We decided we had plenty of time to scramble up and tag the summit. Even after all that the snow hadn't really softened much. We waited a bit longer and finally decided to just start skiing. Luckily the snow softened up about midway down for some nice fun turns. Perfect day of summer skiing on a 14er!
