Skiing Lamb's Slide Couloir, Long's Peak - 7/9/17
For my 50th ski day of the season, I decided to climb/ski Lamb's Slide Couloir on Long's Peak. Troy picked me up at 3am in Boulder and got to the trailhead at 4am. The parking lot was packed with Long's Peak hikers and we were lucky to get one of the last few available spots. A few minutes later, Jake and Evan pulled up and we all started gearing up. We started hiking at 4:20am and were up above treeline as the sun came up ~5:30am. We made it to the 2nd Privy at 6:30am and then to Chasm Lake at 7am. We then traversed around the lake and hiked up to the snowfield just below the Diamond (~8am) and rested for a bit to let the sun warm up the snowpack. It was amazing to be sitting in a spot looking at Lamb's Slide Couloir to our left and the Diamond right in front of us. We saw and heard a few climbers up on the face. At 9am we strapped on crampons and started climbing up the couloir. The snow was in great condition, firm, but just soft enough to easily get purchase with the front points of our crampons. At 10am Jake and I topped out at the end of the snowfield. We took some pictures and then clicked into our skis and made our way down. By this time the sun was shining on the entire line and the snow was perfect for making turns down the steep couloir. About 3/4 of the way down my legs were burning so I stopped to take a breather as Jake continued in a single push. With huge grins, we rendezvoused below the Diamond where Evan was camped out taking photos. What a classic ski line! I was happy that we had timed everything perfectly. An amazing day of summer skiing!
