Dog Sledding Jackson, WY

The second part of our trip to Jackson Hole, WY involved a dog sledding trip that our friend Peter Barnes recommended. We didn't really know what to expect, but it turned out to be an incredibly fun day. The outfitter had around 135 dogs, all bred for dog sledding and some have raced in the Iditarod. An interesting fact is that despite common belief, sled dogs are not big, muscular husky dogs that you would expect. Those dogs are actually bred more for a certain look, where as sled dogs are much smaller and leaner, as they're meant to run for long distances (think marathon runner). The dogs were really great and absolutely loved to run and pull the sled, so much in fact that if the guide hadn't anchored down the sled whenever we stopped, then they would just take off running without us. They would also do their 'business' while running, which was pretty funny to watch, and if they got thirsty they'd just take a mouthfull of snow. When we'd stop, they would roll around in the snow to cool off. On our trip they took us 6 miles (I think) in to Granite Hot Springs, fed us lunch, then back. Coming soon: photos from the Elk Refuge and video of dog sledding

  • Where the dogs live. Inside of wooden spools that they get from an electric company. Interesting idea, they get a little room inside to sleep, but also a roof to shade from the sun and a 'patio' to keep off of the snow.
