Festival of Aloha 2013 - Cigar Box Ukulele Workshop
At the Festival of Aloha 2013 at the Chicago Old Town School of Folk Music, we signed up for a workshop that taught us how to make ukuleles out of a cigar box. The first step was to get our hands on some cool looking empty cigar boxes. A week beforehand, we hit up a cigar shop and Binny's and were able to score a bunch of boxes for free. At the workshop, we first picked out a neck/fretboard. The next step was to install the tuners. Once that was done, the neck was attached to the box with a screw and a nut glued to the fretboard. We then drilled small holes on the bottom as a place to attach the strings to. Once we stringed up the instrument, it just needed a bridge and sound holes. I was extremely surprised by the sound quality and how well they turned out. It was a great time. I loved the variety of cigar boxes that gave everyone's new uke's an individual character. I plan to cut out my own custom sound holes with a Dremel tool on the one I made.
